What it is
Cortexin is a mix of small brain proteins, called peptides, made from the cerebral cortex (the outer layer of the brain) of cattle. It is sold as a prescription medicine in Russia and several nearby countries, but it is not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
What people use it for
In Russia and nearby countries, doctors give it after strokes, head injuries, and other brain conditions, and in children with learning or development delays. Online, people also talk about it for brain fog, memory, and recovery after a concussion.
What the science shows
Most of the studies come from Russia, and many are done in animals rather than people. When reviewers looked for solid human studies, they found very few, and the ones they found had quality problems, so the hoped-for brain benefits are not proven by strong research.
The catch
It is not FDA-approved, and the research outside Russia is limited and debated. It is made from cow brain tissue, the way another country regulates it is not US medical guidance, and there is no proven long-term brain-boosting effect.
