People take it hoping to sharpen memory and thinking. Some pair it with other nootropic supplements as a way to stretch the brain's choline supply. In China it is sold as a drug for Alzheimer's disease, but in the US it remains only a supplement.
What the science shows
Most human research comes from Chinese trials in Alzheimer's and memory loss. Some found a benefit on memory tests, but the studies were of poor quality, so the results stay uncertain, and reviewers say it is too early to claim it slows Alzheimer's. Western testing did not lead to FDA approval, and the everyday brain-boosting claims are largely unproven.
The catch
It is not a treatment for any condition, and the FDA has not confirmed it is safe or effective. Because it acts like prescription Alzheimer's drugs such as donepezil, mixing it with those or with other nootropics can stack up cholinergic effects and raise the risk of side effects.
