What it is
Nefiracetam (also called DM-9384) is a lab-made compound in the racetam family. It is not an FDA-approved medicine. In the United States it is sold only as a research chemical, not as a legal dietary supplement.
What people use it for
It is one of the racetams people talk about for low drive and apathy (a lack of motivation). Its original studies, run in Japan, looked at apathy and low mood after a stroke. Everyday use is uncommon and mostly comes from people reading the old trial papers rather than from wide real-world experience.
What the science shows
The human research is limited and mixed. In one stroke study a higher amount appeared to lower apathy scores, but a later, carefully controlled trial found it was no better than a dummy pill. A 2025 review of these trials called the findings conflicting and said no firm conclusion can be drawn. Any thinking or memory benefit in healthy people is unproven.
The catch
This is an experimental compound, not an approved drug and not a recognized supplement, so its purity, safety, and long-term effects in healthy people are not well studied. The evidence behind the brain claims is weak and inconsistent.
