- What it is
- SHLP-2 (short for small humanin-like peptide 2) is a research peptide that the body naturally makes inside mitochondria, the tiny power plants in our cells. It is a lesser-known relative of two other mitochondrial peptides, humanin and MOTS-c. It is sold only as a research chemical and is not an approved medicine.
- What people use it for
- In the peptide community it is talked about for metabolism, blood sugar handling (insulin sensitivity), eye health, and general anti-aging or longevity. These are hopes drawn from early lab work, not approved or proven uses.
- What the science shows
- Almost all of the evidence comes from mice and from human cells grown in a dish, not from people. In those lab studies it protected mice from diet-driven weight gain and improved their insulin sensitivity, and it protected human retinal cells in a macular-degeneration model. There are no human studies testing whether it actually works.
- The catch
- There is no FDA-approved SHLP-2 product and no human intervention data at all, so the longevity, fat-loss, and metabolic claims stay unproven in people. Because it has never been tested in human trials, its safety in people is unknown.
