What it is

Aviptadil is a lab-made copy of a natural body chemical called vasoactive intestinal peptide, or VIP, which relaxes blood vessels and airways. It is not approved by the FDA in the United States and has only been tested in research studies.

What people use it for

In studies, researchers have looked at two main uses: a version breathed into or put into the body to help people with severe breathing failure, and an injected version for erectile dysfunction. An injected combination product called Invicorp is sold for erectile dysfunction in some countries outside the US, but not here.

What the science shows

Aviptadil has been through human trials. A large, carefully controlled study in people with COVID-related breathing failure found it did not improve outcomes compared with a dummy treatment.

The catch

Aviptadil is investigational in the United States, with no FDA-approved drug label. The US FDA declined to authorize it for emergency use, and it is not an approved or pharmacy-compounded product here.
