Cetrorelix Reference

Educational, not medical advice reference for Cetrorelix: Reproductive, Hormonal; regulatory status, evidence posture, source review, and schedu…

Reference summary

Cetrorelix is a synthetic decapeptide GnRH antagonist that directly blocks pituitary GnRH receptors without the agonist flare phase. Unlike depot GnRH agonists, its effect comes on within hours and resolves within days after the last dose. The Cetrotide label is anchored to controlled ovarian stimulation in ART, where it prevents the premature LH surge that would otherwise cancel the cycle. Outside ART, cetrorelix has been studied in benign prostatic hyperplasia and hormone-sensitive disease, but there is no FDA-approved label for those uses.

Regulatory and posture

Categories
Reproductive, Hormonal
Aliases
Cetrotide, GnRH antagonist, Cetrorelix acetate
Evidence posture
human - Reproductive endocrinology drug. Prescription-only and prescribed in the context of a clinician-monitored ART cycle. Off-label or self-administered use is not safe and is outside FDA approval. Bone-density concerns of long GnRH-agonist use do not directly apply because cetrorelix is used short-term, but ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a label-level concern of the surrounding stimulation protocol.
Regulatory status
FDA-approved prescription medication (Cetrotide). Indicated to inhibit premature LH surges during controlled ovarian stimulation in assisted reproductive technology (ART) cycles. Prescription-only, written specifically for a single ART cycle, and dispensed through fertility programs.
