Educational, not medical advice reference for Dulaglutide: GLP-1, Fat Loss; regulatory status, evidence posture, source review, and schedule not…
Plain English
- What it is
- Dulaglutide is a prescription medicine sold under the brand name Trulicity. It is a GLP-1 medicine, meaning it copies a natural gut hormone that helps the body keep blood sugar in check. It is given as a shot under the skin.
- What people use it for
- Doctors prescribe it to help control blood sugar in adults and some children with type 2 diabetes. It is also approved to lower the risk of serious heart problems in people with type 2 diabetes who have heart disease or heart risk factors. Some people lose weight while taking it, but it is not approved as a weight-loss drug.
- What the science shows
- It is one of the better-studied GLP-1 medicines, with a large amount of human evidence behind its FDA approval. That evidence includes results showing it can lower the chance of major heart events in people with type 2 diabetes.
- The catch
- It carries the FDA's strongest warning (a boxed warning) because it caused thyroid tumors in rats, and whether it does the same in humans is unknown. Serious inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) has been reported, and common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, belly pain, and lower appetite. Any decisions about it belong with a prescriber.
