- What it is
- Humanin is a tiny natural protein fragment (a peptide) made by the energy factories inside our cells, called mitochondria. It is a research-only compound that scientists study mostly for protecting brain cells and for aging. It is not an FDA-approved medicine.
- What people use it for
- A small number of longevity enthusiasts try it hoping for brain protection and anti-aging effects. This use is rare and very experimental, and there is no settled or accepted way people use it.
- What the science shows
- Most of what we know comes from studies in cells and rodents, where it protected nerve cells in the lab. In people, the research is limited to observations that natural humanin levels in the blood tend to drop as we get older. There is essentially no human trial showing it works as a treatment.
- The catch
- This is a research chemical with no FDA-approved product behind it. Its safety, real effects, and long-term risks in people have not been worked out in clinical trials, and the hoped-for brain-protection and anti-aging benefits are not proven in humans.
